about

CRAZY OLD MAN

Crazy Old Man is an original musical that puts the oft-told story of Noah’s ark into a unique and captivating new framework. The essential plot elements are all there (Noah, evil, boat, animals, flood), but in this telling it is the individual characters, rather than the storm, that bring the story to life. No wooden saint, Noah is portrayed as just, fair, and ethical – but also as a consummate cheesemaker and a darned fine mayor. His wife, children, friends and neighbors are regular folks, not cardboard Biblical caricatures. Sam, the proprietor of “Sam’s Seed ‘n Feed,” evokes more of Andy Griffith’s Mayberry than Charlton Heston’s Ten Commandments.

Most distinctive is the portrayal of evil, personified by Dr. Pain and Irwin (the Hope and Crosby of the Underworld) and their despicable colleagues in Dr. Pain’s Carnival. Gambling, drunkenness, lechery, sloth, greed – these and a host of other alluring sins engulf the simple folk of Sharrupak when their annual town fair is overtaken by Dr. Pain’s vile and gaudy crew. Not surprisingly, sparks fly whenever Noah and Pain come together, even before Noah gets word from “On High” that he should switch from cheesemaking to shipbuilding.

While the show is often lighthearted, it explores serious themes like love, loyalty, friendship, heartbreak, and despair as well as hope, faith and trust. The audience is carried along on this journey with a variety of musical styles including classic ballads and fast-talking vaudeville numbers, with hints of blues and jazz. The show closes with a good old-fashioned hand-clapping spiritual that will have the audience humming as they leave the theater!
